July 27, 1999 This was a partying weekend so I didn't do any site seeing. Friday night I went out with some friends to Madrid, a bar with cheap prices, music that I like, lots of places to sit and sometimes it is quiet enough to hold a conversation without screaming at each other. After that we went to Mojo, to see Night Train, a rock and blues cover band that is a lot of fun (though not a style of music I generally listen too. Everyone really gets into dancing at their concerts. They started playing at midnight and we left around 4 AM. I managed to wake up in time to run a vital errend... cat food and kitty litter. It turns out there is an actual grocery store, not too far away from the apartment. I was grateful for this because I bought 2 bags of kitty litter and some food. The weather here is hot and lugging cat supplies great distances is not my idea of fun. I gave the cats two boxes of fresh kitty litter and some food. They expressed their gratitude by leaving an unpleasant surprise for me in the shower.... ungrateful, spoiled brats!!! I generally like cats but these kittens are EVIL. Their mother is neurotic and, in my opinion, a good argument for spaying. That said, if anyone wants a kitten, please contact me. They'd make a great gift to an ex-boyfriend or girlfriend or perhaps your dentist. Exausted by the efforts involved in kitty care (and a late night full of dancing), I took a nap to prepare myself for another late night of dancing. Massive Attack was playing at a park along with some other bands and a bunch of DJs. The whole thing started at 4PM and went to 7AM the next morning. We got there around 6PM. I brought my camera but it got confiscated. Due to this there are no pictures in this entry. Turkish security is weird. Here is what they were confiscating: cameras, plastic bottles of water and hairspray (I saw a whole crate of hairspray bottles when I claimed my camera). The security woman accusingly grabbed my sunscreen demanding an explanation. I explained and pointed at my sunburnt shoulders. She grudgingly replaced it. I zipped out of there before she found my water. (oooh such a rebel!!!!) The strange thing is, the woman in front of me had a half full glass bottle of hard alcohol. The security woman pulled it out, some words were exchanged and then she replaced it! I guess the woman who brought it agreed to share or something. Park Orman had been transformed into playground for hipsters. There was a half pipe for skaters, a large crane for bungie jumping, some weird gyroscope looking thing, you strap yourself into and flip around upside down, bars, the main stage and lots of people. I rushed straight towards the stage because Kurban was playing and they were the only band besides Massive Attack that I actually wanted to see.
We managed to see some of Kurban's set. They are a silly band. I like their happy skate punk songs but some of their other stuff is a bit metal. Unfortunately, most of the bands that played were a bit on the metal side. I also can't get into the concept of a DJ performing. It seems that DJs should be in the background not on stage. How boring! Massive Attack was great! I'll have to buy an album of theirs one of these days. The music fit the evening, refreshing and cool. They are mellow and soulful with a hypnotic beat. After Massive Attack, there was an after hours party in the amphitheatre. The view from the upper edge was interesting. The "stage" was packed with dancing people. The DJ was on one side and there was a screen with videos projected onto it (including the Brothers Quay). There was a layer of haze that filled the amphitheatre from all the cigarrette smoke. It made me think of LA with the amphitheatre as the valley, people as the cars and cigarette smoke representing the pollution.
